Florida Building Contractors
Our Florida building contractors continuing education covers the newest and hottest topics in the field. The lessons will cover topics such as green building, osha regulations, plan reading, concrete, roofing, and mold prevention. Green building is a construction practice that promotes economic health, the community, and the enviroment. This uses technologies such as wind power generators, solar power panels, and recycled wood floors. And mold prevention reviews removal of mold, preventative plans, and common mold problems in new construction.

- Green building - Topics that will be covered are wind power generators, rainwater harvesting, recycled wood flooring, permeable pavement, and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment.
- OSHA - The subject matter will cover preventing fatalities, construction regulations for the building industry, fire protection and prevention, first aid and medical attention, and scaffolds.
- Plan reading - This includes effective techniques of plan reading, sites plans, building plans, foundation plans, ceiling plans, framing plans, electrical plans, and architectural symbols.
- Concrete - This continuing education program will provide current information on building code requirements for high winds, safe rooms and storm shelters, wind forces and wind resistant construction,concrete masonry, precast concrete, removable forms, and insulating concrete forms
- HVAC & Mold - Now that mold is a hot topic in the construction industry, this course will cover HVAC systems as a source of mold, new construction and mold, rightsizing, standards and regulations, liability, and litigation.
- Roofing - This course will review gable roofs, hip roofs, rise and pitch, overhangs, calculating roof area, and roofing terminology.

These are the current requirements for renewing your Florida building contractors license. We will always provide the newest information available and will update the requirements as soon as there are changes.
- To renew your Building Contractors License in the state of Florida, you are required to complete 14 hours of continuing education every two years.
- One hour each of workplace safety, business practices, worker’s compensation and an Advanced module of the Florida Building code must be included in the 14 hours.
- Contractors licenses expire August 31 of every even year and continuing education must be completed prior to the expiration. Course must be completed during the two year period. Extra CE hours can not be carried over.
- Online course providers must be able to document, upon audit, that a licensee has remained active in an online format for at least 50 minutes of each one hour of continuing education awarded. American Contractors logs time in and time out to the accumulated time. The option to fast forward through a presentation is also prohibited.
Personal Protective Equipment (OHSA)

Topics reviewed during this class include: assessment of PPE needs, hardhats, gloves, goggles, hearing protection. In 2004, a reported 1,224 construction workers died on the job with 36 percent of those fatalities resulting from falls. The intent of this course is to prevent as many accidents as possible and covers relevant factors including unstable working surfaces, misuse of fall protection equipment, and human error. Proper procedures will be covered including the use of guardrails, fall arrest systems, safety nets, covers and travel restriction systems. At the conclusion of this session, the user will have an option to take a seventy five question practice test, used to prove competency in these topics.
Roofing for Contractors

This 2-hour course purpose is to provide an overview of roofing. The terminology, basic theory, and codes will be discussed as well as the proper steps for making calculations with regard to roofing. How to calculate a rafter, hip valley, hip rafter and the number of bundles required for a structure are only a few of the math items discussed. The attendee will have the option of taking a 25 question quiz at the end of the course.
Ladders and Stairways

This 1-hour course purpose is to provide the student with a thorough understanding of the OSHA requirements for the use of Ladders and Stairways. OSHA estimates that there are 24,882 injuries and as many as 36 fatalities per year due to falls from stairways and ladders used in construction. Nearly half of these injuries are serious enough to require time off the job. Working with ladders and stairways is hazardous. This course will address the safe use of such equipment with the intent to prevent as many injuries as possible.
